Friday, October 20th
Alright folks we have a good weekend of fight to look forward to and it’s all kicking off on Friday night with Bellator 185 free to watch on Spike TV! This is set to be a very exciting card and if you don’t have time to do the research yourself, don’t worry I did it for you!
Let’s talk about some fights on this Bellator card that you should not miss if you consider yourself a true fan of Mixed Martial Arts and how we think the battles will play out:
Heather “The Heat” Hardy VS Kristina Williams
Heather Hardy, who is arguably one of the pioneers when it comes to women in combat sports, makes her second appearance to the octagon this weekend against Bellator newcomer, Kristina Williams. This fight could really begin to establish Hardy’s credibility within the world of MMA if things go in her favor. While Kristina Williams is a relatively unknown challenger, she still offers a real threat as a majority of Heather’s combat experience comes from inside a boxing ring with only one Mixed Martial Arts fight prior to Friday.
While I do not know much about Kristina Williams, I do know she is not known for her reputation in finishing fights or devastating grappling ability which would be her saving grace against Hardy.
This fight seems to be a bitter sweet attempt to build the reputation of Heather Hardy within the Mixed Martial Arts community against an opponent who she should be able to dispatch easily.
Prediction: Heather Hardy wins via unanimous decision or TKO
Neiman Gracie VS Zak Bucia
Zak Bucia is another fighter on the main card this Friday who will be making his debut to the Bellator organization while his opponent, Neiman Gracie is no stranger, with this being his 5th bout under the Bellator name.
Neiman Gracie, as his family name may suggest, has obtained numerous medals throughout multiple Gi and no Gi, Jiu Jitsu competitions with 5 of the 6 wins in his professional MMA career coming by way of submission. It is not out of the question to assume that his game plan coming into this fight will be to get horizontal with his challenger as soon as possible and drown him in his Brazilian lineage while avoiding any unnecessary damage from the powerful dance partner he has been given in Zak Bucia.
Bucia however, who has been fighting in smaller organizations for around 10 years, has victories of all possible outcomes including submissions, KO’s, and decisions. Over his career, Zak has claimed a welterweight championship in two smaller organizations and has never met a defeat by submission. However, he has also never fought a member of arguably the most influential Jiu Jitsu-based family this sport has ever seen…
The entire idea around what the Gracie family has been able to accomplish over the last 25 or so years is that you can overcome power with technique, strength with efficiency, and size with knowledge. Of course in a fight anything can happen but as long as Neiman is able to avoid Zak Bucia’s devastating KO power, I believe he will emerge victorious here.
Prediction: Neiman Gracie via submission or unanimous decision.
Gegard Mousasi VS Alexander Shlemenko
Alright folks here it is… the main event! Live and free on Spike TV we have a very exciting main event to look forward to between two of the most underrated finishers ever to compete in Mixed Martial Arts. These two seasoned veterans have each been in this sport professionally for over 10 years, fighting at multiple weight classes, with a combined total of 116 pro fights…
Former Strikeforce champion, Gegard Mousasi is making his Bellator debut in this fight after leaving the UFC on a 5 – fight winning streak over some of the best opponents in the middleweight division including Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort. This man was a Netherlands amateur boxing champion at the age of 16 and began his professional MMA career only 2 years later. Of his 42 professional wins in MMA, 35 of them were by finish… Mousasi shows up with one goal in mind and that is to force his opponent to give in to his will and he does exactly that very…very… well.
Alexander Shlemenko, much like his adversary, has been fighting for longer than some of you have been post pubescent. The former Bellator Middleweight champion is known for his unorthodox striking and devastating Muay Thai clinch. Recently, Shlemenko has gone back and forth between fighting in Bellator and M-1 Mixed Martial Arts competitions where he has been successful in both. 39 of this Russian nightmare’s 52 victories in MMA have come to him via finish…
I. Have. No. Idea. how this fight is going to play out.
Two dynamic strikers.
Two men who live to rob their enemies of consciousness.
Two seasoned veterans of the sport.
This fight is going to be exciting, that much is undeniable. Nonetheless, what I am most anxious for is to see where Gegard Mousasi can land himself within the Bellator rankings if he emerges victorious here and how his career within this organization will vary from his former employer.
Prediction: Gegard Mousasi via KO/TKO. (But who the F&%^ knows…)
